Card Readers are a common device in many homes and businesses. A card reader is simply a mechanical data input device that reads information from a card-shaped storage medium. The earliest such devices were punched card readers, that reading the plain paper or card punched cards which were used during the early years of the personal computer industry to store applications and data for computer applications. Since the technology has changed, more modern methods of data storage have been devised. In this article, we shall look at a simple review of a popular device, the Palm pre-installed card reader.
The first major difference between such modern day card readers and earlier forms is in the storage medium chosen. Modern day memory cards (neeblec cards) are much smaller, cheaper and lighter in weight than their predecessors. This means that card readers can store and read more data on the same size card, and for less money. As stated before, the card reader industry has responded to consumer demands by providing lower-priced products with better functionality. For example, some modern day readers have an Ethernet port for connecting printers to the storage device.
The main technologies used in modern day card readers are memory cards and microprocessor controlled (PC) software. Card readers use either one or more microprocessor-controlled softwares to read and process the stored data. Memory cards are read using special software that interface with the reader’s memory. The advantage of using a memory card over a hardwired printer is that printing is not necessary, as the data is already stored on the reader’s memory.
Other types of card readers include the USB interface and the SD type. The main differences between these two types are in the technology they use to communicate with the storage device. A USB interface reader uses a USB port to interface with the storage device, whereas the SD type uses an SD card that could be connected to a host computer or other ready made storage devices.
The advantage of using an SD card reader over a USB interface is that it provides greater flexibility and convenience. For example, it may not be possible to print using a printer without using an SD card. In such cases, an SD card reader allows printing from any computer with an SD card inserted. It also allows data transfer to another computer with the use of a USB cable.
There are many different categories of card readers available in the market. The most popular among them are those manufactured by Apple, Cisco and SanDisk. The most innovative of these brands is the iPad card reader. The iPad’s design has required additional technology to support it. To use the iPad’s Ink feature, the reader must be equipped with a connector accessory that carries an AC adapter.
